Department of Social Anthropology

"Anthropology is the study of what it is to be human"

Social Anthropology at St Andrews is internationally renowned for our innovative teaching and cutting-edge research. Famed for our outstanding results and friendly atmosphere, and set in the ancient and beautiful setting of Scotland's first university, we were ranked first in both the 2014 National Student Survey of Teaching and the 2014 Guardian ranking of UK Universities. We have regional expertise across the world, along with three internationally recognised research centres:  the Centre for Amerindian Studies, the Centre for Cosmopolitan Studies and the Centre for Pacific Studies.
