Fees and Funding Opportunities
PhD funding for 2016-17
As a postgraduate student at the University of St Andrews you will be expected to pay tuition fees every year that you are in attendance. Visit the University's PG Fees and Funding page for more information.
The School’s two main schemes for PhD scholarships for 2017 entry are:
1. Studentships awarded by the Graduate Training Programme of the Scottish Graduate School for Arts and Humanities
UK and EU students are eligible to apply for the studentships. Please contact our Director of Postgraduate Studies, as soon as possible if you are interested in a nomination from the University of St Andrews. The final deadline for completed applications is noon on 6 January 2017, but candidates are strongly encouraged to contact us in November or December. More information on this scheme.
2. Scholarships awarded by the School of Classics from its own endowment funds.
The School sets aside funding each year for PhD scholarships to support applications from both ‘Home/EU’ and ‘Overseas’ students. The scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit and research promise, to cover both fees and stipend. All applications received by Friday 6th January 2017 will be considered for these funds; please let us know if you do not wish to be considered for an award. There is no separate application form.
Other funding sources (PhD and MLitt)
The University of St Andrews also offers a range of university-administered funds which offer financial support for postgraduate students, both ‘Home/EU’ and ‘International’, both for the PhD/MPhil and for the MLitt taught course. For example, Scotland’s Saltire Scholarships contribute to tuition fees for students from Canada, China, India or the USA.
You may also wish to explore:
- Other external funding bodies
- Grant-making trusts
- Employment opportunities within the university
- SAAS postgraduate loans
If you are an overseas applicant, you should check your own government’s Education Department to see whether they offer or promote any funding schemes for postgraduate study in the UK. Examples of such schemes include Loans for US Postgraduate Students and SSHRC awards in Canada.
St Andrews graduates who have graduated during the last three years are eligible for a Recent Graduate Discount, which offers a 10% discount on tuition fees.
The University has in the past offered means-tested Accommodation awards to Postgraduate students in University residences. Applications typically close at the end of May.
The next Postgraduate Visiting Day is on Wednesday 8th March 2017.
St Andrews is one of the top 50 universities in the world for research and teaching in the Arts and Humanities and among the top 20 for International Outlook, according to the Times Higher World University Rankings 2014/15
St Andrews ranked 2nd equal for research excellence among UK Classics departments in REF 2014.
The School of Classics invites potential research students to consult individual members of staff about their proposed topic.
